Passage: 2 Samuel 7:1-11

December 24th at Pender United Methodist Church was a day steeped in tradition and reflection, marking the fourth and final Sunday of Advent. The congregation gathered for the 9:00 AM Traditional Service, a time-honored ritual that prepared our hearts for the coming of Christmas.

Pastor Bruce took to the pulpit with a message that resonated deeply with the congregation. His sermon, titled "The Wisdom of God," delved into the profound depths of biblical texts, specifically 2 Samuel 7:1-11, 2 Samuel 7:16, and Luke 1:26-38. His insightful interpretation provided fresh perspectives on these rich scriptures, offering guidance and enlightenment.

The service was further elevated by the soul-stirring hymns that filled the chapel. The congregation sang "Come Thou Long-Expected Jesus," "To A Maid Engaged to Joseph," "The Virgin Mary Had a Baby Boy," and the poignant "What Child Is This?/Greensleeves." Each hymn was a melodic reminder of the season's deep spiritual significance.

A particularly moving moment was the Lighting of the Fourth Advent Candle. Titled “The Prince of Peace,” this ceremony, based on Isaiah 9:6-7, was gracefully conducted by Greg and Maya Berry. Their actions symbolized the light of Christ coming into the world, bringing hope and peace.

Maya also contributed two special segments, “A Moment for Missions” and “Good News for Children”, where she shared inspiring stories and messages, nurturing faith and joy in young hearts.

During the offertory, the congregation was treated to a beautiful rendition of “Hark the Herald” by Megan Parker and Patrick King.

Advent, derived from the Latin word adventus, meaning "coming" or "visit," is more than just a countdown to Christmas. It is a season of spiritual journeying. Over these four Sundays leading up to Christmas Eve, we engaged in preparation and anticipation of Christ's arrival. We reflected on the ancient Jewish longing for a Messiah and our own desires for forgiveness, salvation, and new beginnings. As we rejoiced in the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem, we also looked ahead, filled with hope, to the second coming of Christ, the ultimate fulfillment of all the promises his first arrival bestowed upon humanity.
