On Sunday, December 22, 2024, Pender United Methodist Church celebrated the 4th Sunday of Advent with a beautiful Lessons and Carols service.
This timeless tradition, inspired by the famous “Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols” held at King’s College in Cambridge, England since 1918, has become a cherished staple in United Methodist congregations over the past four decades.
The service featured a sequence of readings and music tracing the story of God's redemptive plan through the ages, beginning with creation and culminating in the joyous anticipation of Christ's birth. Rooted in ancient vigil traditions, this format provided a profound sense of continuity with the past, blending history with heartfelt worship.
The congregation joined in vibrant singing of both classic and contemporary carols, while the choir’s performances added a festive and spiritual richness to the service. It was a moving celebration that honored a historic practice and enriched our worship during this sacred season.
Thank you to everyone who joined us for this meaningful lead-up to Christmas. We are grateful to have shared this special moment with our church family and community.
