Let the Amen Sound!
A Joyful Celebration by the Pender Joy Ringers, directed by Brian Stevenson
On February 2, 2025, the Pender Joy Ringers filled the sanctuary with a powerful and uplifting performance of “Let the Amen Sound!”, an arrangement of "Lobe Den Herren" arranged by Hart Morris. This thrilling rendition of "Praise to the Lord, the Almighty" featured exciting meter changes, dynamic contrasts, and intricate rhythms, making it a joy to ring and a perfect festival piece for worship.
A Hymn of Praise Through the Centuries
"Praise to the Lord, the Almighty" has been a cherished hymn in Christian worship for centuries. The text is based on Joachim Neander’s original German hymn, “Lobe den Herren, den mächtigen König der Ehren”, first published in 1680. Neander, known for his passionate and poetic hymns of praise, created what hymnologist John Julian later described as "a magnificent hymn of praise to God, perhaps the finest creation of its author, and of the first rank in its class."
The melody associated with this hymn was first published in 1665 and is thought to have evolved from a folk tune. It has undergone various adaptations over time and is cataloged as Zahn number 1912c, with multiple variations. The hymn text is inspired by Psalm 103 and Psalm 150, emphasizing God’s greatness, mercy, and the call for all creation to praise Him.
Bringing the Hymn to English Worship
The hymn’s enduring legacy reached English-speaking congregations through Catherine Winkworth, who translated Neander’s German text in 1863. Her translation preserved the hymn’s majestic and reverent tone, making it a beloved part of hymnals and worship services worldwide.
A Musical Celebration of Faith
The Pender Joy Ringers brought this historic hymn to life with energy and precision, making it a worshipful and exhilarating experience for all in attendance. The brilliant harmonies and rhythmic complexity of Hart Morris’ arrangement captured the grandeur of the original hymn while offering a fresh and exciting interpretation.
As the final notes rang out, the sanctuary echoed with the joyful sound of praise, reminding us all of the power of music in worship and the timeless beauty of hymns that have carried the faith through generations.
