Hypothermia Shelter 2023

2023 Winter Season

"If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth." 1 John 3:17-18

The hypothermia program is administered in partnership between Fairfax County, FACETS and the Faith Communities of the area.  Pender has participated in the program as a host church for many years.

We anticipate between 25 and 30 persons during our week which is February 12 through the 18th, and breakfast on the 19th.

The guiding principles of the program are that:

  • Homeless individuals deserve a safe, temporary shelter during cold weather to prevent them suffering from injury or death due to hypothermia.
  • Guests in the program are adults who have the right to exercise free choice in making decisions (even if they are not choices you would make). We need to respect this part as we work with our guests.
  • Hypothermia shelters are non-discriminatory and we must be sensitive to cultural and ethnic differences as we work with our guests.
  • We will treat each of our guests with dignity and respect and will not delve into their personal lives.
  • People who are homeless have few resources and we may be their final option for basic necessities of life: food and shelter.
  • We are one of many such participating organizations and as a Christian community are expressions of God’s love and redemptive power to those less fortunate than ourselves.

FACETS is working in partnership with Pender during the Week of February 12 through the 18th. We have agreed to:

  • Work as a Team.
  • Support each other in finding the most efficient ways to achieve the purpose of the Hypothermia program.
  • Be open, frank, honest, and constructive in all dealings with each other (this means polite too).
  • Share work equitably and reasonably, consistent with agreed arrangements.

"For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.

Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you?

When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?
The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me"
