Frequently Asked Questions
Enclosed are answers to some frequently asked questions about Small Groups at Pender.
Do I have to attend Pender to join a Small Group?
No. Our Small Groups are open to the community as well as those who attend our services.
When can I join a Small Group?
Anytime. Any Small Group shown on our list is open to new members until the group size reaches a maximum capacity of about 12 persons. The groups can be larger, depending on the nature of the group and the size limitations of the meeting location.
How frequently do the groups meet?
At least monthly, but many groups meet weekly or bi-weekly. The members of the group agree to the frequency of meetings and the meeting times, which are usually 1 ½ to 2 hours for each meeting. The List of Small Groups provides these details if the group has already established. New groups will agree to the meeting dates and times convenient to the members.
How long do Small Groups continue to meet?
Some groups will meet for six (6) to eight (8) week studies or projects. Other groups will meet throughout the year and may continue for several years. Each group will decide the duration of the group.
Do I have to attend every meeting?
No, but each group will establish ground rules for the group, which will include agreement by each member regarding attendance, punctuality, preparedness and confidentiality. Every member will be asked to agree to the ground rules when he/she joins the group as a way to show respect for other members and commitment to the group.
What is the purpose of a Small Group?
Christian fellowship, support, growth in the knowledge of scriptures, commitment to one another and to living according to God’s “instruction manual”. Small Groups help us feel connected to each other and part of the family of God. And Small Groups have fun!
What happens at Small Group Meetings?
Each group decides the format of its meetings, but all Small Groups will have certain common characteristics. Some portion of each meeting should include scripture reading, prayer, and sharing of needs or concerns of members. All groups will share the love of Christ with each other as they fellowship, study, and have fun together.
Can I join more than one Small Group?
Yes, you can join as many groups as would like to join.
I'm not sure which Small Group to join. Can I attend several group meetings before I commit to join a Small Group?
Yes. All Small Groups have an "open chair" for guests at their meetings and welcome visitors to attend and see what the group is all about. You are encouraged to attend numerous group meetings until you find the group that is right for you. You may decide to start a Small Group of your own to meet a specific need or desire. The Small Groups ministry is here to help you.
